This release is both a fresh and rewarding look back at one of the nation's most prominent musical groups as well as a testament to the ongoing creativity of its surviving members. The critical and popular acclaim that the AEC continues to garner is proof of the enduring legacy they have established. The selection of works showcases the breadth and depth of their creativity, and their legacy. The ensemble achieves this with their signature, trademark sound, where the music of the AEC is both aggressive and exploratory, with a strong African-American inflection. This set features performances by Lester Bowie, Malachi Favors, and Jarman, along with other ensemble members including Hugh Ragin, Willie Pickens, Malachi Favors, Paul Plimpton, Tomeka Reed, Jaribu Shahid, Junius Paul, and many others. The music of the AEC is diverse, but it always carries a deep connection to the African-American cultural heritage, as well as the global culture and arts community. This set is a fitting farewell to Lester Bowie, Malachi Favors, and Jarman, and a testament to the creative legacy of the Art Ensemble of Chicago.
In 1978, following the group's first tour to Brazil, drummer and co-founder Lester Bowie died of cancer at age 38. This set was recorded during a fateful time for the group, particularly as co-founders Malachi Favors and Jarman followed him within months. Yet, as with the original recordings, there is no sense of a loss, but a commitment to continue the pattern of creative expression that will be the legacy of this group for the next half-century. The 1988 Live at the University of Michigan performance is presented here, preceded by a thorough selection of studio recordings that sound like a gallery of the AEC's ensemble at full strength. A collection of often-unseen photos from the late 1980s is coupled with other studio documents and ephemera, from the group's first recording session in 1967 to the present. There is much to commend this compilation as a first step in a more in-depth study of the AEC's artistic development, and as the first of many offerings that will document their remarkable ongoing creative journey. All of these recordings are presented in their original period-appropriate formats, and are complemented by an informative booklet written by the group's co-founder, Malachi Favors.
Over the years the Art Ensemble/AECO catalog has added some impressive works, but We Are on the Edge moves the group's creative momentum into fresh territory and stands alone as an astonishing achievement in the studio and the concert arena.
